Chainsaw milling
Chainsaw milling is where the cutting tool is a chainsaw held in a purpose built frame. This allows the cutting bar to be set at a cut depth required by the customer.
Chainsaw mills are used where is it unfeasible to use the larger band saw either due to situation or economics.
Given their superb portability they are best for those hard to reach logs in woodlands or barns where the logs can't be moved to a better bulk milling site.
Also, where a customer only has a single or a few logs to mill, this can be a cheaper option.
Maximum cut size at present is 33"/84cm - which is the absolute maximum width of log that the equipment will fit over and cut.
Note that this method can also be used to reduce a large log in diameter to prepare for transportation or on-site bandsaw milling.
This method is slower than bandsaw milling and produces considerably more waist, but with usually less set up time.
We use vegetable oil as bar lubricant so there is no problem composting the wood waste.

Cutting and Logsplitting
If you have your own logs we can cut and split these for you.
Our Rock Machinery Venom 22t is available for action.
Petrol driven and towable, we can get to your property and split onsite. Can be used horizontal or vertically and can cope with most rounds, although, there are always those really gnarly bits that just won't split...we just cut those up separately!
£200/day with operator, fuel separate.
Timber from Trees...
Landowners often have trees lying around whether these are windblown trees, or trees they have had to cut down for good reasons. We can have a look and give you an appreciation of what may be achieved from each log - whether you are looking for saleable timber, or timber you can use yourself with the knowledge that it was from your trees.
For example, an oak that had been lying in a woodland for 15+years since having been cut down by the electric company to install a supply line post. This was 90cm wide, 7m long and weighed probably 4 tonnes. Completely decayed around the outside and partially buried, we dug this out, dragged it with a helpful tractor and then cut it into 3 sections and milled around 35 (35mm) full width boards (through and through cutting) for the customer. There was some elements of fungal attack, but mostly the wood was sound (and extremely heavy).
Please note that we do not provide lifting or dragging equipment, as such, customers will need to provide equipment where logs need to be brought to the mill side and where necessary, be lifted on to the mill.

Building projects
Ideally, we would all like to have access to our own supply of timber where we are certain of where it comes from. Building from your own wood or locally sourced wood can give a different dimension to any building project.
Creating timber for your building projects from your trees. This can be clean edged or waney edged (with bark still on/off) for that rustic effect.
The timber then [preferably] needs to be seasoned (dried) so is stacked using spacers called 'stickers' on levelled bearers, weighted (to promote flat drying) and then covered from rain ingress. Ideally, a well ventilated barn/garage/polytunnel is used or, if available, these stacked timbers could be transported for kiln drying. We do not currently offer this service.
Please note, that we do not 'grade' or guarantee any timber for construction purposes (we are not certified to do this). Therefore, the customer uses any timber milled by us at their own risk.
On occasions our customers require that the logs to be milled to be extracted from their wood. We are happy to help you with this, but you will need to supply any lifting machinery should it be required.

Other services
Tree felling, hedge thinning, hedge surveying
We undertake other woodland and hedge work, although we are not hedge layers/foresters, we can assist with thinning out overgrown hedges and unmanaged woodlands to customer requirements. While Devon hedgers normally flatten the hedge - removing majority of the standing wood, tying down occasional stems along the banks and leaving spaced standards, we prefer to thin hedges/over hanging branches to maintain tree presence where possible and allow more of the 'better' trees to mature for harvest later. But, this is only our preference.
If you would like your hedges mapped and surveyed so that you can manage a harvest rotor easily, then we can also do this for you. We'll use basic software tools which should be available to most to provide simple schematics and lists of tree species and available wood in hedges.
We can also build logstores onsite - these will be bespoke. We do not supply log stores to order.
Please call to discuss rates for these 'non-milling' services.
